Taking action to retain his youthful hairline, Jamie Laing decided to get a hair transplant, which changed not only his appearance but also his confidence. In this article, we explore who Jammie Laing is and what type of hair transplant he had.
Who is Jamie Laing?
Jamie Laing’s influence is multifaceted, from his emergence as a prominent figure in “Made in Chelsea” to his rich heritage, which dates back to the 1890s with his ancestor Sir Alexander Grant, the inventor of the iconic McVitie’s digestive biscuit.
Since its debut in 2011, “Made in Chelsea” has captivated audiences and significantly shaped fashion and beauty trends. Over the past decade, Laing has solidified his role as a key influencer in men’s style, leaving a lasting mark on the fashion landscape.
Has Jamie Laing been open about having a hair transplant?
Yes. Jamie Laing has been open about having a hair transplant and suffering from hair loss. According to an exclusive report by The Sun on 15 May 2018, he revealed this after making this comment: “My hair issues started, I reckon, when I was about 19 or 20.
I started to recede and that’s when you begin to, sort of, lose that Jude Law looks, but unfortunately, I wasn’t as good-looking as Jude Law and I was probably a lot shorter and I wasn’t an A-list Actor. So, I had a lot of things not going for me. For me, I’ve always been worried about my hair”
Is the exact time of the hair transplant known?
Yes. Jamie Laing had a hair transplant in 2018 at the age of 29 years old. He decided to do the surgery after following his friend to a hair clinic. Initially, he was told he didn’t need surgery but as soon as he took off his hat he felt treating his hair loss was still worthwhile and went along with the surgery.
Jamie Laing Before and After Hair Transplant
In 2013, at the age of 24, when he was actively participating in the reality show “Made In Chelsea”, Jamie Laing was seen to experience early signs of hair loss in the temples.
This is most commonly caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) as part of male pattern baldness. Unfortunately, Jamie Laing is not alone with 30% of men beginning to experience some form of hair loss by the age of 30.
Over 5 years, he is shown to have a progression of hair loss with the corners receding further and the thinning through the hairline getting worse.

At the point of seeking a possible hair transplant, our Surgeons assessed Jamie Laing’s hair loss, giving him a score of 3 on the Norwood scale which is a popular tool to grade how advanced hair loss is.
This is shown in the following image, taken in 2017. Jamie Laing’s genetic hair loss presents itself with an ‘M’ shaped hairline and the scalp shining through the thinning which made Jamie cut his hair, possibly to disguise the extent of hairline recession.
In 2021, at the age of 32 years old, having had a hair transplant, we see that hair loss has dramatically changed. In the latest picture, we see the temple recession in the corners restored to a full and more youthful hairline and generalised thinning on top of the scalp now looking thicker throughout the top of the scalp.
Has Jamie Laing Had a Hair Transplant and Why?
Yes, Jamie Laing has confirmed that he had a hair transplant.
The choice to have a hair transplant is a personal one. Many people can conceal hair loss well until it gets to a tipping point at which stage they may want to consider more permanent options like a hair transplant.
Being a public figure, a celebrity’s appearance plays a crucial role in their reputation and success, leaving them with little margin for error when it comes to concealing hair loss. Research indicates that there is a strong association between a full, youthful head of hair and public perception in the entertainment industry.
For instance, Jamie Laing’s experience highlights this reality; as he faced a noticeable hair recession while starring in “Made in Chelsea,” he felt the pressure to maintain a polished appearance. Ultimately, his decision to undergo a hair transplant was influenced by the desire to enhance his image and confidence, reflecting the importance of hair as a significant aspect of personal branding in show business.
As shown in these images, hair transplants can be life-changing and Jamie Laing’s case is no exception. For many people who have had a hair transplant, one of the huge benefits is restoring freedom back to that person, so they don’t have to struggle with self-image, rather they can style and enjoy their hair as they wish.
How many grafts did Jamie Laing have in his Hair Transplant?
Our award-winning surgeons estimate that Jamie could have had close to 2000 grafts transplanted into his hairline as part of his hair transplant, with each graft producing 2-4 hairs.
This type of temple recession would require a minimum of 200 single hair grafts to be placed into the frontal hairline, forelock and mid-scalp to create a soft natural-looking appearance at the front and a denser appearance further back.

What Type of Hair Transplant Did Jamie Laing Have?
Jamie Laing likely had a FUE procedure. In 2018, Jamie Laing donned a shaved head. Shaving the head allows access for the surgeons to remove grafts as part of the Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) hair transplant technique.

Further evidence that Jamie Laing has had an FUE hair transplant is the scarring in the donor area. Hair transplants leave scars of varying types depending on what surgery you opt for. An FUE hair transplant generally leaves minimal “dot-like” scarring due to the nature of individually removing hair follicles a millimetre in diameter.
While we couldn’t find pictures showing dot-like scarring around his donor area online and there is scarring as well around the sides of his head as seen on Jamie Laing, we can still conclude he likely opted for a FUE hair transplant technique.
Follicular Unit Excision (FUE): FUE is a meticulous technique where individual hair follicles are harvested from a donor area (usually the back of the scalp) and transplanted to the target area, such as the temples.
This method has become highly popular due to its minimal visible scarring, natural-looking results, and short recovery time allowing him to get back to being camera-facing quicker. This is also a technique that you can perform without shaving too much hair- it is called an unshaven hair transplant.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) Strip: FUT, also known as the strip method, involves removing a small strip of scalp from the back of the head, from which hair follicles are then extracted and transplanted to the desired areas.
This technique can yield a high number of grafts in one session, making it beneficial for individuals with extensive hair loss such as Elon Musk. However, FUT does leave a linear scar on the donor site which would be visible with a short haircut. Therefore, it is unlikely that Jamie Laing has had an FUT strip hair transplant as we can’t see this type of scar when Jamie cuts his hair short after surgery.
Both techniques are routinely performed at The Treatment Rooms London, in particular, FUE hair transplant surgery can allow for a seamless recovery back to normal life with minimal evidence that a hair transplant procedure has been performed.
