Jürgen Klopp Hair Transplant: Before, After, and His New Hairline

Jürgen Klopp, the world renowned manager of Liverpool FC, who recently left the club and is now the Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull GmbH, tackled his receding hairline head-on with a hair transplant procedure. Known for his animated presence on the lines, Klopp is proof that confidence is key both on and off the pitch. His now refreshed look aligns with his vibrant personality, and here we’ll explore the impact that hair restoration surgery can have on one’s appearance and psyche.

    Who is Jürgen Klopp?

Jürgen Klopp is one of football’s most celebrated managers, leading Liverpool FC to multiple Premier League and Champions League triumphs. His energetic yet strict coaching style, and media-friendly persona have made him a global icon.

On January 1, 2025, Klopp officially started his new role as the Head of Global Soccer for the Austrian multinational private conglomerate company, Red Bull, where he will be overseeing their international network of clubs.

The German football executive is known to deliver fire on the pitch, entertainment for fans and long-term vision for clubs under his leadership. Beyond tactics, Klopp has openly addressed personal grooming, including teeth whitening and, notably, restoring his hairline.

Has Jürgen Klopp Been Open About Having a Hair Transplant?

Yes. Jürgen Klopp has been refreshingly vocal about his hair transplant. When a journalist for the German tabloid, Bild, questioned his fuller hairline in 2013, he confirmed the procedure, saying, “Yes, it’s true. I underwent a hair transplant. I think the results are really cool, don’t you?”

Klopp, the one-time Borussia Dortmund coach, took his openness about undergoing a hair transplant a step further when he recommended the surgeon he used to the 2014 FIFA World Cup final winner, Mario Götze. Mario recalled the hilarious story in a 2019 Players’ Tribune article where he said,

“I will never forget the time I ran into him in Düsseldorf during the summer. He was going to see the specialist there to have his hair transplant done. This became big news in Germany, but he was so funny about it. He was smiling, telling me all about it — how cool it was going to look and everything.
And then as he was leaving, he just gave me a wink and he said, ‘Mario, don’t worry, I will save the phone number.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He said, ‘The doctor’s number. I’ll save it for you. In a few years, you might need it.”

Is the Exact Time of the Hair Transplant Known?

Yes – Klopp had his hair transplant procedure at a clinic in Düsseldorf, Germany, in the spring of 2012, at the age of 45.

Jürgen Klopp Before and After Hair Transplant

In 2009, at the age of 42, when he was manager of the German football team, Borussia Dortmund, Klopp was seen to experience early signs of hair loss at his temples. This type of hair loss is most commonly caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that causes male pattern baldness.

The former player turned coach began wearing his hair longer and added a side parting to better conceal the hair loss at his temples. Unfortunately, Klopp is not alone in this predicament, as over 25% of men begin experiencing some form of hair loss in their 20s, with half of men experiencing loss by their 50s.
Throughout his early 40s, Jurgen’s hair loss progressed with the corners receding further back.

At the point of seeking a hair transplant, our Surgeons assessed Klopp’s hair loss, giving him a score of 3 of 7 on the Norwood Scale, which is a popular tool to grade how advanced hair loss is.

The following image was taken on-pitch after he was declared champion in Germany following Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga win in 2011. His genetic hair loss at this stage was advancing, and presented itself as an ‘M’ shaped hairline with the scalp shining through the thinned areas at the front.

In 2013, at age 46, Jürgen’s hair loss dramatically resolved. His hair transplant was a game-changer! In the latest pictures, we can see the temple recession and the front of his hairline restored to a fuller and more youthful appearance, with thickness restored throughout the top of the scalp. Klopp looks polished, sophisticated and from pictures alone exudes more confidence.

Has Jürgen Klopp Had a Hair Transplant and Why?

Yes, Klopp confirmed having a hair transplant.
The choice to have a hair transplant is a personal one. Many individuals can conceal hair loss well up until a certain tipping point, after which they may want to consider more permanent options like a hair transplant.

In the public eye, appearance is important, and those under the spotlight often opt for surgery due to public image pressure, as a receding hairline can undermine on-screen confidence and career prospects.  Hair transplant surgery is not only for the rich and famous, but rather for those struggling with their hair loss. Research shows that individuals with hair loss are likely to feel physically and socially less attractive, leading to low self-esteem in social scenarios

How many grafts did Jürgen Klopp have in his Hair Transplant?

Our award-winning team of skilled surgeons estimate that Klopp could have had approximately 1200–1500 grafts transplanted into his hairline, with each graft typically producing an average of 1-4 hairs.

This type of temple recession would require a minimum of 200 single hair grafts to be placed into the frontal hairline and blend seamlessly with existing strands to create a soft, natural-looking appearance. What Type of Hair Transplant Did Jürgen Klopp Have?

Having looked through sequential years to assess his hair length, our Surgeons believe that Jürgen Klopp likely underwent an unshaven hair transplant procedure (UFUE), as there is no evidence to suggest that he shaved his head for his hair transplant. This technique lets surgery be less noticeable which is ideal for public figures.

Further evidence that Klopp has had an unshaven FUE hair transplant is the lack of a detectable donor area on the back and sides of his head.

An FUE hair transplant generally leaves minimal “dot-like” scarring due to the nature of individually removing hair follicles less than a millimeter in diameter. This is unlike an FUT strip hair transplant, which generally leaves a single linear scar in the donor area after the strip is removed.

The hair that is relocated is resistant to the balding process, and when transplanted, grows unhindered and potentially permanently.

These two are techniques (FUE and FUT) are routinely performed at The Treatment Rooms London, where minimising the areas of shave can allow for a seamless recovery back to normal life with minimal evidence that a hair transplant procedure was performed.

    Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)

FUE is a meticulous technique which removes individual hair follicular units from the back and sides of the head (also known as the safe donor area) to an area of recession, like the hairline and temples. In each follicular unit, also known as a ‘graft’, there are 1-4 hairs on average.

This FUE method has become highly popular due to its minimal scarring, natural-looking results, and shorter recovery time. Most public figures opt for this method as it allows them to get back on screen and resume public appearances soon after their hair restoration procedures.

    Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT, also known as the strip method, involves removing a small strip of scalp from the back of the head, from which hair follicles are then extracted and transplanted to the desired areas.

This technique can yield a high number of grafts in one session, making it beneficial for individuals with extensive hair loss, such as Elon Musk. However, FUT does leave a linear scar at the donor site, which is one reason high-profile clients often prefer FUE for less visible scarring.

Where Did Jürgen Klopp Get His Hair Transplant?: Choosing a Surgeon-Led Clinic Matters

While the exact clinic where Klopp had his hair transplant remains unknown, it is clear he chose a reputable clinic. While a hair transplant is relatively risk free and straightforward, having the surgical procedure done well and in a natural-looking way requires the surgical skills and artistry of experienced surgeons and a highly trained professional team of experts.

Looking at Klopp’s hair transplant, the overall design of the hairline is conservative and age-appropriate, making it look natural and elegant.

Further steps must also be taken to ensure that the newly transplanted hair will look natural at the microscopic level. Single hair grafts should be placed at the very front of the hairline, making it appear soft and fluffy, in keeping with a natural hairline. When surgery is done poorly, larger grafts are often placed in the frontal hairline, leaving that person with a plug-like, harsh hairline like the machine hair sewn onto a doll.

Another sign of a premium hair transplant is the close attention to natural hair directions. It is not uncommon to see hair transplants where grafts stand up vertically, leaving a very unnatural appearance.

Natural-looking angulation suggests that any work done would have used precision equipment to accurately control graft angulation. An example of such equipment is the use of implanter pens, a technique our Surgeons specialise in.

At The Treatment Rooms London we have mastered the medicine, artistry and the surgical skills required for quality hair restoration surgery. We offer our patients world-class care before, during, and after their procedure. Our skilled surgeons pay keen attention to factors such as hair texture, curl pattern, and natural hairline progression to create a seamless transition from existing hair to transplanted areas.

It is important when considering surgery to select a reputable, surgeon-led clinic. Top-tier clinics like The Treatment Rooms provide and prioritise personalised assessments, employ a highly skilled medical-surgical team, and utilise cutting-edge technology to ensure precise, natural-looking results.

Grey Hair: Klopp’s salt-and-pepper tone required careful graft selection to match texture and color. This is known as ‘cherry-picking’ grafts during the extraction process.
